“In high school, I started reading poetry and writing it,” Darnielle said in a 2010 interview,
and I think that was where the kernel of inspiration was [for the Mountain Goats]—reading John Berryman, Georg Trakl, Paul Celan, Sylvia Plath, of course. Later this American poet named Norman Dubie became a pretty big inspiration for me in the early days of the Mountain Goats. I felt all the power that’s in poetry, but at the same time, it’s not usually a super-immediate power. I’ve always connected to things you can really experience in their raw state. You know?
The interviewer didn’t quite know, so he said, “Can you elaborate on what you mean in terms of a ‘super-immediate power’ in relation to your poetry and music?” “Stuff that hits you immediately—not necessarily hits you hard—but stuff that makes this instant connection between the performer/writer and listener,” Darnielle said. “And to me, music is where that happens.”
Poetry has a power, music has a super-immediate power, and what emerged from their combination was a lot of Mountain Goats songs. The orientation toward super-immediate power was reinforced, in the early years, by all of the duets with the boombox. “Everybody was multi-tracking when I got started—it just seemed so boring,” Darnielle said in a 2002 interview. “And what I was doing with my boom-box just seemed so much more raw than your guy-with-an-electric-guitar-and-a-four-track thing.” But even when that changes, starting with Tallahassee, you can hear in most of the band’s songs (especially during the period between Tallahassee and Transcendental Youth) an anti-artfulness inside the art, a rawness for rawness’s sake. “I want it to feel like at some point a hand is going to reach out from the speaker and touch you on the chest,” he said in 2011.
In this section of All Hail the Mountain Goats, which will begin in a couple of days, I’m going to talk about twenty songs, roughly a CD’s worth, that embody those poetic and musical qualities, and that are, I think, especially good points of entry into the catalog as a whole. SPEAKING OF WHICH . . .
. . . here’s a year-by-year listing of all the Mountain Goats songs that I personally have listened to. It’s not a completist thing (the songs from Darnielle’s other projects, like the Extra Glenns, aren’t here, and neither are the songs that are in the hands of private collectors, or appeared and then disappeared, or whatever). It’s just a list, in case you’re interested, of 600+ released and unreleased songs that you can either purchase or find on the internet right now.
